EDM 2347: Free Gaza Campaign

October 27, 2008

That this House applauds the excellent work of the Free Gaza (FG) Movement in highlighting the fact that Israel is imposing collective punishment on the 1.5 million people of Gaza, in contravention of Article 33 of the Fourth Geneva Convention; acknowledges the considerable pressure applied by the Israeli government on a FG voyage in August 2007; wishes the latest boat travelling from the port of Cyprus to Gaza carrying both a large group of concerned human rights workers, including among them Palestinian MP, Dr Mustafa Barghouti, and the Nobel Peace Prize winner Mairead Maguire, as well as medical practitioners and supplies, a safe voyage with no outside interference; and calls upon the Government to take action to ensure that the massive economic, political and humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza is brought to an end as a matter of urgency.

EDM 2520: Status of Western Sahara

October 11, 2008

That this House recalls that at 9.00am on 16th October 1975, the International Court of Justice delivered its Advisory Opinion on the Western Sahara, upholding the right of self-determination of the people of Western Sahara; welcomes the public reading of the said opinion at the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) organised by Sandblast, a UK-based arts organisation and the Centre for the Study of Colonialism, Empire and International Law at SOAS to remind the international community of its duty; and urges the UK Government to to play a full part in ensuring that the Saharawi people are able finally to exercise their right to self-determination after 33 years.

EDM 2333: House of Lords decision on Chagos

October 10, 2008

That this House recognises that Chagos Islanders were disgracefully treated by successive British governments, by their forced removal from Diego Garcia and the Archipelago and their impoverished life in Mauritius and the Seychelles; further notes that the indefatigable spirit of the Chagossians enabled them to win their Right to Return by a High Court decision in 2000; further notes that the late Robin Cook as Foreign Secretary accepted this decision in its entirety; deplores the Government’s use of Orders in Council nearly four years later to overturn the High Court judgment and the failure to consult Parliament on the matter; further notes that the Chagossians have won successive legal judgments in the British courts and notes that by a majority verdict the House of Lords endorsed the Foreign Secretary’s appeal, upholding the Orders in Council; nevertheless believes an historic injustice has been done, and that the Foreign Office should now open serious discussions with the Islanders on their mode of return and to provide sufficient funding from UK and European sources to enable justice.

2219: Local authorities and housing provision

October 9, 2008

That this House notes with concern that the current financial crisis is likely to have a disproportionate impact on the most needy in the community who have huge outstanding loans on houses that may subsequently be repossessed; calls on the Government to provide sufficient resources and powers to local authorities to prevent such homelessness brought about through the repossession of such properties, thereby enabling those families to become local authority tenants; notes the large number of unsold private sector developments in many boroughs; and further calls on the Government to enable local authorities to purchase these and thus ensure that people living in desperately overcrowded or hostel accommodation are properly housed.
