Gaza cannot be forgotten

Amid all the fanfare surrounding Bush’s visit to Jerusalem last week to meet Israeli Prime Minister Olmert and President Mahmoud Abbas, the media conveniently turned its gaze away from Gaza. The appalling humanitarian tragedy there is of no interest to Bush and the neoconservatives - their strategy is to isolate the strip, refuse to deal with political leaders elected to represent its people and hope that the world’s media looks the other way. Poetic justice of Blair return

There is a certain poetic justice that Tony Blair’s return to the political centre stage should be as a guest speaker at a rally for France’s ruling UNP in Paris last weekend, welcomed by President Nicolas Sarkozy. In the midst of his battle to raise the maximum working week, destroy public-sector pensions and privatise public services, Sarkozy still found time to invite Blair. Read more

Beware the general

General Petraeus and his Pentagon press officers are heading into hyperdrive. They are bizarrely claiming that a slight reduction in casualties in Iraq among troops and the civilian population amounts to a victory for Bush’s decision to send 30,000 extra combat troops. They then go on to assert that this shows that the whole strategy from 2003 onwards has been successful.

Not only is this claim false but it also shows a cold-hearted disdain for the totality of the destruction in Iraq. Read more
